Srinagar, Sep 10 (KNO): Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu is functioning as an important centre for capacity building of medical teachers under the framework of the National Medical Commission (NMC), having trained 206 medical faculty members through eight Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) / Revised Basic Course Workshop (RBCW) programmes.
According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the college has continued to make significant contributions towards strengthening faculty development and competency-based medical education (CBME) in the region.
“The Regional Centre is not merely a training platform; it is an opportunity to build a sustained culture of quality medical education, academic collaboration and faculty development across the region. The NMC Regional Centre for Faculty Development was allotted to GMC Jammu in June 2025, marking a significant milestone in the institution's contribution to medical education. The Centre is mandated to support faculty development and effective implementation of CBME across medical colleges under its regional network,” said an official.
He said, “The eight BCME/RBCW programmes conducted at GMC Jammu include those held in July 2019, November 2021, May and September 2024, September and November 2025 and May and September 2026, collectively training 206 faculty members. Faculty participating in these programmes have represented institutes from the region. GMC Jammu has also conducted two Curriculum Implementation Support Programmes (CISP), in July 2019 and August 2020, further supporting faculty in translating the principles of competency-based education into classroom and clinical teaching.”
“The Regional Centre at GMC Jammu currently supports all medical institutions of J&K, including GMC Srinagar, SKIIMS Soura, SKIIMS Medical College Bemina, GMC Anantnag, GMC Baramulla, GMC Handwara, GMC Kathua, GMC Rajouri, GMC Doda, GMC Udhampur, ASCOMS Jammu and GMC Jammu. The initiative is expected to strengthen competency-based teaching, innovative learning methodologies, assessment practices and continuous faculty development across the region, thereby contributing to improvement in the overall quality of medical education,” the official added.
Notably, GMC Jammu is playing a larger regional role in shaping medical educators and strengthening the implementation of CBME across Jammu & Kashmir—(KNO)
